Aug. 22, 1964 - President Johnson told Democratic Governors today he still is considering several men for the party’s Vice Presidential nomination and will make his selection known early next week.
Johnson’s statement was relayed by Gov. Carl Sanders of Georgia, who had asked him about the Vice Presidential choice at an afternoon meeting at the White House.
Sanders said Johnson told the 30 assembled Governors that “he felt like this was one of the hardest and one of the most important decisions he has had to face in his life.”
In a speech to the Governors, Johnson urged the Democratic convention to commit itself to a program of “freedom for all nations, peace for all people.”
“The goals of our party should be the goals of our nation,” Johnson said.
Four Southern Governors boycotted the get-together.
