I have tested several food or meat thermometers before but they were very different to this one, far more basic and far less expensive too. The others were all simple affairs, just stick one end of the probe into the food and read out the temperature on the other. This new smart thermometer uses an app and is much more than just a temperature gauge.

In the simple but rather stylish box, you receive the temperature probe, an attractive wooden charging case, a USB charging cable, a user guide and for some reason, a ribbon and a piece of decorative paper. Build quality is all high end and has a distinctly premium feel to it.

The bamboo case, which has a magnetic strip to allow it to be easily positioned in the kitchen, contains a rechargeable battery used to charge the probe, A ten minute charge should give the probe up to 48 hours of use - and features a multicoloured LED to confirm the current battery and connection status. Below the LED is a flush mounted Off/On button

The 3.7 x 90 mm stainless steel probe measures temperatures in the range of -20° to 100°C to a depth of 70mm. The plastic probe handle can withstand temperatures as hot as 500°C, so need to worry about your oven being too hot. The way it works is, using the latest Bluetooth 5.4 wireless protocol, the probe connects to the charging case (maximum range 10m) and the charging case connects to your phone (maximum range 23m) where the BBQOVN app displays the reading, which refreshes every second. The app, which can simultaneously connect to multiple probes, does much more than just display the current temperature. It is preloaded with multiple meat and food type presets and will alert you in real time to the progress of the cooking and suggest and estimate cooking times and when to baste or reposition the meat. You can also program your own recipes to work with the app. There is also a loud audible alert should the probe or case get disconnected.

Using the device is simple enough once you have familiarised yourself with the app. It all works in real time and can guide you through the cooking process for the preset food types. The probe is primarily designed for meat but can be easily adapted for use with any type of food.

This is a very attractive and stylish device, cleverly designed and simple to use. It works very well and should work on any compatible phone. There are many much cheaper temperature probes out there but this is much more than just a thermometer. If you take your cooking seriously, particularly meat or barbecue cooking, then this might be just what you need.
