Welcome to my first time trying a souls game. Yes, in 2024. I'm a late bloomer, it's in the channel name. This is the Prepare to Die edition from Steam. I didn't really know much about this genre other than "is hard". I actually thought these were horror games. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they are a blend of action/adventure and rpg. Still in Undead Burg. I spend a bit of time still getting used to the game. I learn more about the systems but don't make a ton of progress. Big fight with Black Knight takes me quite a while. After a couple of really stupid (on my part) deaths, we have a pig roast. Then we explore the church, killing both that giant cleric and the magical priest. We return to the graveyard and then get scared away from the catacombs. Then we explore a bit and upgrade a bit. Lot's of flailing around in this one. We go back to the bridge and annoy the drake a few times but fail to progress. Then we take the express elevator down to New Londo Ruins were the ghostly residents don't welcome visitors. Much death. This is a rough one. I even considered skipping this episode. We attempt to progress past the ghosts in New Londo Ruins and fail enough that we run out of transient curses and can no longer fight them. Then we just try to run by, over and over, and fail enough that I lose my temper a bit. I get pretty disheartened but at the end of the episode I make a little progress in a different direction. In contrast to last episodes disaster, we actually make lots a progress this time around. We go back to the drake armed with some internet knowledge and take his tail. This time around we finish exploration of the depths and conquer the boss down here. The Gaping Dragon is a really cool design but a somewhat uneventful fight. We kick off this episode with an explanation of some off camera farming I did. Then we make our way back to Andre the Smith and finally kill that evil Sphinx thing that chased us away earlier. This time around we head back up the cliff and explore the Darkroot Garden. Many ambushes in this area but some really good loot too. We summon a witch who helps us kill a boss. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We start out finishing the first section of Darkroot Garden, then we link up with Undead Berg through the watchtower. Inside we fight a dude with a dragon tooth for a weapon. Back down below in the Darkroot Basin we come across a giant hydra! It looks scarier than it actually is and it goes down with little trouble. Then we further explore the forest meeting giant murder cats and a club of gank ghosts that accepts us as a member. We stop short at the giant door as I am a bit intimidated by it. This time we have a lot of shopping to catch up on. We have picked up some new embers and equipment and Andre is here for us. Then we head back up to Firelink and meet our new friends. Flush with newfound power, we head back to the New Londo Ruins to claim vengeance on those ghosts. I suffer deja vu as I get wrecked by spooks over and over again. This time we take a careful plunge into Blightown. We manage to see pretty much all of the upper portion. This time we continue our Blightown exploration and clean out the depths below. We ride a water wheel up and find a nifty connection to Valley of Drakes, which leads to New Londo Ruins, which then leads to Firelink. This time we enter the spider hole and take on Quelaag the flaming spider centaur lady-thing. She is far more scary looking than dangerous though so she goes down pretty easily. Then completely unexpectedly we find the other bell and wake up a giant! Choosing to delve deeper we uncover a secret door with another spider lady as a fire keeper. Then further down we enter hell itself apparently. The demon ruins is pretty intense. This time we delve as deeply as we can into the Demon Ruins. We kill a whole herd of Taurus Demons, hot foot dash for loot, and then fight a pack of Capra demons! Still trapped in the Painted World, we explore our options in this snow covered fortress. I am way more intimidated by the Phalanx then it deserves. Back in Anor Londo, after being so rudely abused by our appreciation for fine art, we take on the kingdom of the giants. This time we make it to the end of Anor Londo. We summon Solaire to help in the fight with Ornstein the Dragonslayer and Smough the Executioner. It's a pretty great fight, but one we ultimately lose. This time we get serious and defeat Ornstein and Smough. Unfortunately you only get loot for the last one you kill so I miss out on the Dragon Spear because I don't get Ornstein's soul. We meet the princess of the giants Lady Gwynevere. She tasks us to kill her dad. Fratricide by proxy? But he's already dead? We go back and join the spider lady covenant and learn a neat fireball spell. The Onion Knight is at Firelink and is "going below". Frampt likes our Lord Vessel and eats us and takes us on a journey. He tasks us with gathering special Lord Souls to fill the vessel. This time we finish out the Great Hollow and find yet another area at the bottom. The Ash Lake is pretty small but creepy. It seems both of these areas are only accessible one way, through the double secret wall in Lower Blight Town. We fight another Hydra! This time we delve into the dark! The dead rest not beneath Lordran and the Catacombs beckon. There are a few traps and twists to overcome and a whole lot of skeletons, necromancers, and exploding heads. The constantly resurrecting skeletons can be put down for good (at least until you rest) with a divine weapon, or you can kill the necromancer responsible for animating them. This time we finish the catacombs and delve into the Tomb of Giants. We have to fight a strange boss called Pinwheel. We save the priestess and put her retainers out of their misery. This time we struggle a bit in Tomb of Giants, ultimately losing all our souls and humanity. Rather than struggle through I turn around and try to tackle New Londo Ruins yet again. Much progress is made this time and the old healer guy gives us a key to the floodgate now that we have the lordvessel. With the waters receded we can delve much deeper and encounter new enemies and the very large ember. This time we finish out New Londo with a fight with the Four Kings. Finally done with these troublesome ghosts! Then we take another shot at the drake on Hellkite Bridge but he bugs out again and seems impossible. Frustrated, we turn our attention to more important matters and head toward the Dukes Archives above Anor Londo. This time we continue through the duke's archive, killing crystal zombies all the way, until we come across Seath the Scaleless. He kills us, in what seems to be a scripted death, because we spawn in a prison within the archives. We break free and must fight through his snake men guards and his twisted Cthulu horrors. We exit the library into a courtyard filled with crystal golems. We meet the daughter of the onion knight! We head down into the crystal cave at the end of the courtyard. This is ridiculous! Armed with internet knowledge we finally cross the Crystal Cave and get our revenge on Seath! We absorb his lord soul and head back to Firelink to talk to everyone around. This time we finally finish delving into the Tomb of Giants. On the way down a Black Knight falls dead at our feet and gives us his halberd. We travel below the Demon Ruins now that the way is opened. Inside we fight a couple of bosses, with Solaire helping us defeat one of them. We obtain a ring that let's us run on lava and opens up quite a bit more exploration for us. We travel through a truly bizarre area with an army of zombie dragon butts, then we head into an ancient maze of a temple. Along the way we encounter the Onion Knight and help him in his heroics. Sadly, we witness the fall of Solaire as he is taken by some kind of sun parasite and tries to kill us in his madness. We plunge back through the Lost Izalith and go down a slide to a very strange boss. The Bed of Chaos is not a traditional fight but it does have it's challenges. Ultimately, it's not too difficult as long as you don't get surprised by the sudden falling floor. After claiming the last Lord Soul we head down to Darkroot Basin and find the portal to Oolacile. We are pulled back in time and face the chimeric guardian of this sanctuary. We kick off this episode with a bang. The bang of my armored corpse hitting the riverbed below. But this is Dark Souls, we persevere. We enter a chapel like structure and find the famed Artorias. The great knight is clearly corrupted by some evil taint and trails black sludge and mist. It's a cool fight but we prevail and put him out of his misery. Then we make an abortive attempt at traversing the forest chasm. The dragon down here doesn't appreciate visitors. After a few deaths we decide to go down into the Oolacile township instead. The soundscape here is amazingly creepy. Gibbering, squelching, wailing freakish monstrosities guard the many nooks and alleys as we discover hidden treasures while constantly descending further into this mad place. We continue further in the depths of the Oolacile Township, killing the warped denizens therein. At the bottom of the town, in the dungeons in fact, there is a crack in the wall leading to the Chasm of the Abyss. Lot's of mutants here and an army of souls. The humanity itself given form. We chase the cat lady, friend of Artorias, to an elevator shortcut. Equipped with the pendant we try to take on the Dragon again, thinking it will protect us from his dark breath. Apparently the dark is just color, as it does fire damage still and we die quickly. A lot happens in this one. We head up the tower and meet Gough, who shoots the black dragon down for us. We head back to the canyon and this time we can take the fight to Kalameet. It's not an easy fight but we prevail. Returning to Gough, he gives us his bow and tells us the story of the corruption plaguing this place. We head down into the Chasm of the Abyss to cut out the source. Along the way we find that the cat was leading us to a hidden Sif! Here in the past he is a normal sized wolf and we must free him from his spirit prison. Delving deeper into the chasm we come to the origin of the taint. Manus the Father of the Abyss must be put down to stop the hateful spread. With the help of a newly freed Sif we bring an end to the corruption and free princess Dusk. This is it! The end of an incredible adventure. We put the last of the Lord Souls in the great brazier and head for the heart of the rot. Gwyn, architect of the fall of this world, must be replaced. We must fight through his host of knights as we travel through the blasted land where he holds court. It looks like the epicenter of a massive explosion.
