On July 6, 2024, just before 7 a.m., San Diego Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from the 5400 Block of La Jolla Boulevard. The unidentified male caller was yelling at the dispatcher, demanding Police units at the scene "Right Here, Right Now." Several other members of the public called 9-1-1 and reported a man was blocking the street with his car and that he was holding a knife. Officer Aguilar and Officer Andrew arrived on the scene to find the man, later identified as 25-year-old Dejon Heard, standing next to his car. Heard was holding a knife. Both Officers gave Heard commands to "Drop the Knife".

When the Officers exited the patrol car, Heard said, "Pull 'em Out" while holding a knife. As Officers drew their service weapons, Heard said, "Alright, Let's Do This" and then charged forward. Officer Andrew continued to give commands to "Drop the Knife" as Heard approached closer while raising and slashing the knife in the air. Heard did not comply and advanced on Officer Andrew on the passenger side of the patrol car. Officer Andrew fired his weapon and struck Heard. Officers provided medical aid until the arrival of paramedics. Heard was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
