Soccer fans are used to see players rolling around on the floor like they’ve been shot. But this time, he had been.

Brazilian police are investigating the most bizarre and criminal footballing act since Frank Lampard’s last managerial job, after a cop shot a goalkeeper. A youth match between Gremio Anapolis and Centro Oeste ended in a 2-1 defeat for Gremio Anapolis, leading to a minor scuffle. Keeper Ramon Souza was in the thick of things as police and security tried to reduce the tensions. It was at this point of the officers pulled out a gun and shot Souza in the leg with a rubber bullet, seemingly for no reason. It was not a shot he was able to save.

Souza wheeled away in pain as the players, and commentators, struggled to comprehend the bizarre scene they had just witnessed. Souza was later treated in an ambulance for the wound to his leg. Gremio Anapolis called it an ‘unfortunate, ridiculous and revolting event,’ and a ‘violent, dirty and horrible act against one of our players.’ The state Military Police have said they are investigating the shooting, however, if they’re anything like VAR, they’ll probably just say the keeper was offside.
