What is this BluMat Soil Moisture Sensor?

It’s a TENSIOMETER.
Fill the chamber with water…
It measures millibar
The millibar display gives you a number that tells you different ranges where you are dry, moist, or saturated.

Where did you buy it?
I bought it from a distributor online and it was something that was hard to source at the time.

We don’t even have an affiliate link, but we’ll put a link to Blumat and if you want to find a source to buy one, you shouldn’t have any problems.

How long have you been using the Blumat?
Been using it since Season 6 -wasn’t sure about at first and was experimenting.

Was it expensive?
Super-expensive!
Supply problem at the time.
About $100CAD each, after the shipping etc.
There might be cheaper options, out there but I can’t speak to that … anyway, the BluMat works for me.
Got the idea from Mr. Grow It I think, and I figured, if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me!

How did you set it up when it arrived?
When it arrived, my first thought was OMG “IT’S SO BIG”
Wondering if it was like one of those cheapo moisture meters like Mrs. GrowDaddy uses for houseplants. where you stick it in each plant one by one, and it gives a reading.

So it’s not like Mrs. GrowDaddy’s houseplant moisture meter.

This thing ain’t going anywhere.
You stick it in the bag with the plant and it stays there.

So ( bought 3 more. Pretty much had to.
DESPITE my … frugality.

Do you think it’s helping with your grow?
It really seems to be helping with the grow.
It is SO NICE to have the visibility of what’s in the bag without having to pick them up and guess.

The plants and the microbes really like staying moist, especially through veg.

Takes about 2 gallons to TOTALLY saturate the 7-gallon bag

So I let it get down to a millibar reading that I’m going for.

How does it affect your day-to-day watering?
This has totally changed my day-to-day watering regimen.
We actually have a spreadsheet and we PROMISE to keep better notes next season.

Every week we would go through the past 7 days of my chicken-scratch notes and figure our the 7-day average

Would you recommend it?
I would recommend getting a moisture meter - I have a Blumat and I love it, but you might find something that works as well.

How does this differ from dryback watering?
Dry-back watering is safe, but I think I was drying out TOO MUCH - I might even have caused my girls some hermie-ing from the drought-stress.

I love having this information at my fingertips so I can keep the plants most of the time, but if I want to dry out the plants a bit (to get rid of fungus gnats or to give the plants some “gentle stress”), then I know where the limit is, in millibars. That way I don’t stress them TOO MUCH.

What would you say to fellow growers about the BluMat?
I’d tell you guys if you’re in 5-gallon pots or less, there are other products you can use to keep the plants moist and keep the microbes alive and active. They go dormant when the soil gets really dry.

At a 7-gallon pot or more, the BluMat (or any good quality moisture meter) could work really well for you to and really help with your grow.
