France’s former First Lady Carla Bruni is charged with corruption

Carla Bruni, the former French first lady and supermodel, has been charged with corruption offenses related to allegations of attempting to manipulate legal proceedings in favor of her husband, former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The charges stem from accusations that she was involved in a conspiracy to cover up allegations that Sarkozy accepted money from Muammar Gaddafi, the late Libyan dictator.

Following questioning by magistrates in Paris on Tuesday evening, Bruni faces prosecution for witness tampering and fraud as part of an organized group.

These charges carry significant penalties, including up to 10 years in prison, which could increase to 20 years under aggravating circumstances, the Daily Mail has reported.
