Two deputy U.S. Marshals, thought to be guarding Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s home in Washington, D.C., shot a suspected carjacker last week, officials reported.

The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on July 5, when 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers allegedly approached one of the deputies’ cars and pointed a gun at the officer. In response, the Marshal fired four shots, hitting Flowers in the mouth.

Flowers was taken to the hospital for treatment and subsequently arrested.

Abigail Meyer, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service, stated that the deputies involved were part of the unit protecting the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices and that the U.S. Marshals typically do not discuss specifics of protective details.

Authorities have not suggested that Flowers was intentionally targeting Sotomayor or the security detail, the Daily Beast has reported.
