Bodycam from the Henderson Police Department shows police shoot a man who pulled a gun on someone.
On June 20 around 9 a.m., Henderson police responded to the 1800 block of Ward Drive near Sunset Road and Margarita Avenue, east of Boulder Highway after a report from a man who was picking up his employee when he said a family member of the employee pulled a gun on him, police said.
The man who pulled the gun was identified as Michael Fretheim, 33.
In 911 calls released by HPD, the victim told dispatch that after he told Fretheim to get out of the house, that is when he pulled the gun on him. He then said Fretheim started “chasing [him] down the street” while holding the gun and guitar.
When officers arrived, they found Fretheim in an apartment complex on Foster Avenue, where he was “uncooperative and refused to comply with officer’s commands.” He then fled from officers, reached into his waistband, and pulled out a gun, according to HPD.
Police said a brief foot pursuit ensued before Fretheim put the gun to his head. Officers continued to follow him as he made his way to the 1800 block of Margarita Avenue.
During the pursuit, the officer can be heard telling dispatch, “He’s saying we’re going to have to kill him.”
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and tell Fretheim to drop the gun. SWAT and the crisis negotiation team responded to the scene and officers attempted to talk Fretheim down.
As officers were talking to him, Fretheim started to walk toward the front door of a home in the area. As he approached the door, Officer Tyler Travers discharged his rifle, hitting Fretheim in the hand and shoulder.
Fretheim then moved away from the home and into the street while still holding the gun to his head. Police were eventually able to get Fretheim to drop the gun before taking him into custody, HPD said. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and then to the Henderson Detention Center after he was discharged.
Fretheim faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of resisting an officer with a firearm being a prohibited person with a firearm, and obstructing an officer.
