A baby echidna is called a puggle. Puggles are born after a short incubation period of about 10 days, and they are carried by their mother in a temporary pouch for the first two months until their spines start to emerge. After that, the mother constructs a nursery burrow and places the puggle safely inside, returning only every two to six days to feed it.

Interesting Facts

A female echidna develops a pouch only when she is going to have a puggle.
Puggles have no external genitalia, and their spines start to emerge after two months of development.
