Boeing jet loses wheel during takeoff. Again.

Most of the Boeing 757 took off, but this wheel decided it was probably safer on the ground. Considering Boeing’s recent track record, that’s not surprising. A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Denver was the latest Boeing flight to suffer a diversity moment, after part of its landing gear fell off during takeoff. The plane was able to land safely in Denver with the remaining wheels, and no injuries were reported either in the plane or the ground.

Boeing’s turbulent year keeps on getting worse. Just yesterday, Boeing announced it would be pleading guilty to charges of fraud, after deliberately covering up errors in the 737 Max autopilot system that led to two fatal crashes, which killed 346 people. The plea deal, which doubles the fines payable to the US government in exchange for reducing the amount liable to the victim’s families to exactly $0, will see them report to a government watchdog for three years. The crashes, and several high-profile accidents that have made parts falling off planes mid-air a regular occurrence, have seen Boeing’s reputation crash, and its business fall significantly behind competitor Airbus. But they hit the diversity quotas, so that’s nice.
