Madam Web Actress Blames Memes for Film Bombing

In a recent interview Emma Roberts, who played Mary Parker in the Sony Spider-Man spinoff Madam Web, blamed internet culture for why the movie failed at the box office.

Roberts personally enjoyed the movie and feels the online discourse surrounding the movie made it into a joke that people dismissed before giving it a fair chance. However, even people who did watch the movie didn’t seem to like it. The film had only a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes among audiences and an even worse 11% for critics. It’s true negative reactions could have played a role in a low opening weekend, but decent word-of-mouth should have helped the film had it actually been good.
