Minuteman Missile Historic Site, Wall, South Dakota

We visited the visitor center at the Minuteman Missile Historic Site, about 20 miles east of Wall, South Dakota. If you decide to visit here, you need to know that as of 2019, the visitor center is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

This isn't just some little tourist center with T-shirts and stuff. This visitor center will have a lot of things for people of a certain age to remind them of their youth. For younger folk, you will get a great history lesson about the Cold War, a period of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. With the development of nuclear weapons, many people were fearful a a third world war.

The visitor center has many TV commercials that aired during the 1950s and '60s. It shows duck and cover drills in schools. (I don't know how the powers that were thought that a school desk was going to protect us, but I remember the drills.)

Delta 01 Tours: New Info since we made the video. "Due to mechanical issues at Delta-01, and out of a desire to enhance the visitors' experience, Minuteman Missile NHS will be resuming the Delta-01 Tours in a MODIFIED format. This modified tour will cover some of the exterior grounds, the elevator room, the topside support building, and a virtual tour of the Launch Control Center. It does NOT take visitors through the underground itself." The quote is from information from the National Park Service Website. You will no longer climb down two 15 foot ladders. The tour is extremely popular. In the summer, you need to make your reservations early. Sometimes the reservations are filled eight weeks out.
