Coalitions can be strange things - and South Africa’s new Government of National Unity (GNU) is no exception. Its dominant member-party is the leftist African National Congress (ANC), whose support base is mainly made up of working-class Black South Africans. The GNU’s second-largest member is the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has predominantly championed the interests of the country’s White business elite. This has led to fears that the new political ‘marriage’ could push the ANC to pander to the interests of the DA’s constituency. In this clip, the ANC’s acting spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi says that, despite teaming up with a political foe, his party will not abandon its ideological position or policies.
