Japan is an economic superpower with top-tier military clout. It used to be an imperialist power, but since its defeat in WWII, it’s confined its forces to a defensive posture at home. It’s a key US ally in Asia.

It’s widely thought Tokyo doesn’t have any bases outside of its territory. Wrong. It actually has one - in East Africa.
