Authorities report that a fast-moving forest fire in southern New Jersey has burned thousands of acres and is now 65 percent contained.

The fire, which started early Friday in Wharton State Forest near Batona Campground in Tabernacle, prompted an evacuation.

As of Saturday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service estimates that 4,000 acres (1,618.74 hectares) have been burned.

Crews have made substantial progress, improving containment lines and conducting burnout operations. Backfire operations are also being used to prevent further spread, ABC News has reported.
