Citizenship Proof to Vote? Democrats Say No, So Illegals Can Vote!

House Democrats are preparing to mount a vigorous effort to block a Republican-backed bill that mandates proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections. The House is set to vote next week on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, which requires "documentary proof of United States citizenship" such as a photo ID, passport, or birth certificate. This requirement aims to prevent illegal aliens from voting, a move Democrats strongly oppose.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark's office has instructed Democrats to vote against the bill, arguing it would prevent Americans from registering to vote with just their driver's license and create an undue burden on many citizens. They also claim it would intimidate election officials and overburden states.

House Speaker Mike Johnson released a report highlighting a loophole in current law that only requires voters to attest to their citizenship, which he likened to a speed limit sign often ignored without consequences. NRCC spokesperson Will Reinert criticized this stance, claiming Democrats want illegal migrants to boost their voting numbers.

Prominent figures, including Elon Musk, have expressed strong opposition to the Democratic stance, labeling it as an attempt to make elections less secure. Despite broad bipartisan support for voter ID laws, the SAVE Act is expected to face significant hurdles in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The issue has gained heightened political importance as Joe Biden's reelection prospects diminish, following a poor debate performance, and the potential impact of illegal votes becomes more contentious.
