floating sea otter

This sea otter mom let her sleeping baby float nearby as she groomed herself. Since sea otters have the densest fur of any animal (between 600,000 to 1,000,000 hair follicles per square inch!), they spend many hours per day grooming and conditioning their fur. This creates insulating air bubbles which trap air and heat close to their skin. Since they don’t have blubber, this dense fur keeps them warm.⁣
