Romans - Chapter 1 Summary:

Romans chapter 1 opens with Paul introducing himself as a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God. He expresses his desire to visit the believers in Rome to impart some spiritual gift and to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. Paul emphasizes that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew and then to the Gentile. He asserts that in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. Paul also discusses humanity’s rejection of God, highlighting that God's wrath is revealed against all ungodliness and wickedness of people who suppress the truth. Despite knowing God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, resulting in futile thinking and darkened hearts. Paul describes how they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images and engaged in various sinful behaviors. As a consequence, God gave them over to their sinful desires, leading to moral degradation. This chapter sets the stage for Paul’s arguments about the universal need for salvation and the righteousness that comes from faith in Jesus Christ.
