Acts - Chapter 23 Summary:

Acts chapter 23 describes Paul's defense before the Sanhedrin, a plot against his life, and his transfer to Caesarea. Paul begins his defense by declaring his clear conscience, which provokes an outburst from the high priest Ananias, who orders Paul to be struck on the mouth. Paul rebukes Ananias, not realizing he is the high priest, and then cleverly divides the council by declaring his Pharisaic belief in the resurrection, which leads to a heated dispute between the Pharisees and Sadducees. Fearing for Paul's safety, the Roman commander takes him back into custody. That night, the Lord appears to Paul, encouraging him to be courageous as he must also testify in Rome. The next morning, more than forty Jews conspire to kill Paul and take an oath not to eat or drink until they succeed. Paul's nephew learns of the plot and informs the Roman commander, who arranges for Paul to be escorted by a large detachment of soldiers to Governor Felix in Caesarea to ensure his safety. The commander also writes a letter to Felix, outlining the situation and Paul's Roman citizenship. Paul arrives in Caesarea and is kept under guard in Herod's palace until his accusers arrive.
