In the 1980s, Bezmenov defected to the West and shared his insights on ideological subversion, providing a chilling glimpse into the strategies employed by intelligence agencies to manipulate and undermine target nations. As a former KGB agent, Bezmenov held that the primary role of KGB was psychological warfare and propaganda, with espionage only being about 15% of their activities.
