The story follows a man who, despite his marginalized status and struggle with alcohol addiction, becomes an unexpected witness and survivor of an alien abduction. Taken from an abandoned bus shelter, he finds himself on a spaceship where he, along with other captives, endures torment at the hands of sadistic alien captors. Among his fellow prisoners are Gideon, who appears to know more about their dire situation, and two others, Tanya and Max. The aliens are described as reptilian and cruel, with their purpose being to inflict pain and death upon their human captives for their own perverse satisfaction.

The protagonist and his companions face excruciating torture and the brutal execution of Max. Just as hope seems lost, an unexpected attack on the alien ship by another spacecraft provides a chance for escape. Rescuers manage to break into their cell and lead them to safety amidst the chaos of battle. Eventually, they are returned to Earth, forever scarred by their experience but given a chance at a new beginning. The story ends with a reflection on hope and the possibility of recovery, even after enduring unimaginable horrors.
