1) Fyodor Lukyanov: Is Eurasia about to get its own NATO? 4 Jul, 2024 20:51

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization could play an important role in a nascent security system that emphasizes total development

Both of the world’s current major conflicts – Ukraine and Palestine – are continuing with no end in sight. In the leading countries of the West, there are internal cataclysms that may significantly influence future behavior. Across the world, from Latin America and Africa to the Pacific, we see very lively processes signaling major shifts. No one doubts that the world is undergoing systemic restructuring. The question is whether the contours of a future order that will ensure a sufficient level of international sustainability are already emerging. In this context, this week’s meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) leaders is of particular interest.

In particular, talk of an Eurasian security system, so to speak, is in the air.

The SCO is unique. It is a full-fledged institution, i.e. a fairly formalized structure with its own bodies and rules (unlike, for example, the BRICS, the nature of which has not yet been clearly clarified). However, it is an institution that has emerged in an era when such associations have generally either not been formed or have proved to be opportunistic and short-lived (it is enough to recall the mass of acronyms that appeared and disappeared in the former USSR). The system of governance based on international organizations is a feature of the second half of the twentieth century, when a solid international framework was built. It was preserved after the Cold War, but its internal content changed. It quickly became apparent that the established institutions were not working in the same (relatively effective) way as before, because the global situation had changed.

Does this mean that old organizations need to be replaced by new ones, or has this type of ordering of the international system simply lost its relevance? At the beginning of this century, many people tended to think the former. Yes, the old institutions had served their time, and new ones would emerge to perform different tasks, but organized in a similar way to the old ones. Over time, however, the approach began to shift towards the second. The world is so complex and diverse that it is simply impossible to fit it into stable and fixed forms. The interests of states are not necessarily contradictory but are rather very different, and their fulfillment requires flexible approaches. And flexibility does not mix well with the rigidity of classical institutions, especially when it comes to bloc structures bound by commitments and discipline. At some point, the optimal form of interstate organization began to appear as ad hoc groups of states that needed to solve a specific problem together.

This was the beginning of the SCO. After the collapse of the USSR, the new Central Asian states and Russia had to resolve border issues with China. Thus was born the Shanghai Five. The problem was solved so successfully that it was decided to preserve and develop this successful format. Over the years, the forum has grown to include India, Pakistan and Iran, while Belarus will be attending this year’s event. The summits are usually attended by the leaders of other powers important to the Eurasian region, such as Turkey and the Persian Gulf monarchies.

Enlargement adds solidity to an organization, but whether it increases efficiency is debatable. And not just because, for example, relations between China and India and between India and Pakistan are, to put it mildly, complicated. This is an obstacle, of course, but not the only one: the main thing is to find an agenda that requires a real joint effort and is of interest to all participants in an applied sense. This is difficult, given the diversity of SCO members.

We should probably start by understanding Eurasia’s role in the world. The major Eurasian powers are now emerging as leaders in international economics and politics. But the natural summation of potential that is often made when talking about the SCO or BRICS is of little use. What is more important is that this vast area cannot be bypassed or ignored; all the processes taking place around the globe depend on it or are linked to it. It is not by chance that Eurasia is traditionally called ‘the core’. And belonging to it unites all the states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which determines both the opportunities and the risks. They are linked to the increased attention paid to Eurasia by powerful extra-regional players, which is not always for the good, to say the least.

The idea of a Eurasian security system is in the air. China, the Central Asian countries, and India have approached it from different sides. Recently, the Russian president launched such an initiative. Eurasian security, unlike European security, is not a military-political phenomenon, but a model for the comprehensive development of the space and the realization of its enormous potential. The SCO has its shortcomings, but it is an ideal platform for formulating the principles of this great project.

2) US responsible for Ukraine conflict – Putin 4 Jul, 2024 16:46

The crisis arose from the “absolutely unceremonious” policies of Washington and its satellites, according to the Russian president

Russia will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict despite the fact that the crisis was caused by the actions of the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that its decision to launch an offensive against Ukraine was motivated by the country’s ambitions to become a part of NATO, as well as its ongoing war against the people of Donbass, who rejected the Kiev government that came to power after a Western-backed coup in 2014.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Kazakhstan capital of Astana, Putin said Moscow has repeatedly put forward specific proposals for the resolution of the Ukrainian issue. However, he added that these had been ignored or rejected by Kiev and its backers.

“Russia has always advocated and continues to advocate a peaceful political and diplomatic resolution to the situation in Ukraine – a crisis that arose as a result of the absolutely unceremonious policy of the United States and its satellites,” the Russian leader said.

He noted that Russia had presented its latest plan last month, which could “immediately” end hostilities, save countless lives, and initiate negotiations if accepted by Kiev and its Western backers.

The president was apparently referring to his earlier promise to order a ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws its troops from all territories claimed by Russia, vows not to seek membership of NATO, and completes a process of demilitarization and “denazification.”

The proposal was rejected by both Kiev and its international backers, who insist on returning Ukraine to its 1991 borders. Nevertheless, Putin has said his offer will remain “on the table” for the time being, while the Kremlin has encouraged the Ukrainian leadership to “think about it.”

Previously, Putin had pointed out that Ukraine’s reluctance to accept Russia’s proposals had already resulted in it losing sovereignty over the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye early in the conflict. The president noted last month that Moscow had initially been prepared to withdraw its troops from these territories if it was promised an uninterrupted land connection to the Crimean peninsula.

Now, however, this offer is off the table and is closed to any debate, according to Putin, given that the two regions have officially become part of Russia after overwhelmingly voting to do so in public referendums in the fall of 2022.

3) Biden says he is proud to be a ‘black woman’ 5 Jul, 2024 02:17

The US president continues to stumble over his words while trying to salvage his reelection campaign

US President Joe Biden has made several radio interview appearances and delivered a brief Fourth of July speech in an apparent attempt to reassure Democrat supporters about his mental capacity to serve following a disastrous debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump.

Biden openly admitted he “screwed up” the debate with Trump, but told The Earl Ingram Show on Thursday that he will “get back up,” rejecting any intention of dropping out of the presidential race.

“I had a bad night.... And the fact of the matter is that, you know, I screwed up,” Biden said bluntly, after his aides spent a week offering various excuses from an alleged preparation overload, to a minor cold and a jet lag from a trip 12 days ahead of the debate.

During a separate interview with Philadelphia’s WURD, the gaffe-prone US leader struggled to find the right phrase while apparently trying to refer to Vice President Kamala Harris and recall his time in Barack Obama’s administration.

Listen to the tweet: https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/1808974408494821730

“By the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first black woman... to serve with a black president. Proud to be involved of the first black woman on the Supreme Court. There’s so much that we can do because... look, we’re the United States of America,” Biden said.

The US president also delivered a four-minute speech at the White House, focusing his remarks on his visit last month to Normandy, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, but seemingly veered off script and lost the train of thought several times, and at one point even called his rival Trump a “colleague.” https://x.com/RNCResearch/status/1808990157086830889

“And by the way, you know I was in that WWI cemetery in France, and.... the one that one of our colleagues, the former president, did not wanna go and be up there... I shouldn’t probably have said it anyway,” Biden said before abruptly cutting the story short, and continuing his prepared remarks.

In another clip scrutinized and mocked by critics, Biden greeted the crowd with a lively “Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy Independence Day!”, after Harris almost misintroduced him as the vice president.

Concerns over whether the 81-year-old veteran politician can successfully handle the presidential campaign and four more years in the Oval Office were reignited after Biden delivered a shaky performance in a televised debate with Trump last Thursday. The incumbent appeared frail and seemingly lost his train of thought on multiple occasions, allowing his rival to comfortably come out on top by most accounts.

A post-debate Reuters/Ipsos poll found that one in three Democrats believe that Biden should quit, while some key donors have reportedly been looking at ways of replacing Biden with a stronger candidate on the 2024 ticket.

4) Child killed in Ukrainian drone strike on Russian town – governor 5 Jul, 2024 05:30 -stop press-

Five other people were injured in the attack on Krasnodar Region, Veniamin Kondratyev has said

A child has been killed and five other people injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Krasnodar Region, local Governor Veniamin Kondratyev has said.

Several drones were shot down by air defenses over the town of Primorsko-Akhtarsk on the Azov Sea coast, Kondratyev wrote on Telegram on Saturday morning.

Some of the debris fell onto a residential area, damaging a three-story apartment block, according to the governor.

Initially, Kondratyev said six people, including two children, required hospitalization as a result of the attack. However, in a later post he wrote that “unfortunately, a six-year-old girl, who was injured in the drone raid in Primorsko-Akhtarsk, has died from her injuries.”

“I offer my most sincere and deepest condolences to the family. Although in such a situation it is very difficult to find proper words of consolation and support,” the governor said.

5) US citizen sentenced to over 12 years behind bars in Russia 4 Jul, 2024 20:48

The Russia-born American national was handed a lengthy prison term for drug trafficking

A Moscow court has convicted Robert Woodland, a Russia-born US national, of drug trafficking charges, sentencing him to 12 and a half years behind bars on Thursday.

The defendant was detained by Russian law enforcement in early January while attempting to place mephedrone into a dead drop – a method of passing goods between people using a secret location rather than meeting in person. It was established that Woodland had earlier taken a large batch of the narcotic from a pick-up point and transported it to an apartment in Moscow, from where he planned to distribute it illegally, prosecutors said.

The scheme appears to be typical for darknet-based drug trafficking, where foot couriers usually take the heat while their large-scale suppliers remain anonymous.

During a search at his address in Moscow, police recovered over 46 grams of the drug, a haul considered under Russian law to be “exceptionally large.”

The offense carries a penalty of 10-20 years behind bars. The prosecution requested 12 years for Woodland. The court opted to give him six months longer than requested, with Woodland’s legal team pledging to appeal the ruling.

Shortly after his arrest, the US State Department said it was aware of Woodland’s situation and declared him to be “wrongfully detained,” while pledging to work to secure his release. Apart from being a US national, the man also holds Russian citizenship.

Born in 1991 in Russia’s Perm Region as Roman Romanov, Woodland was adopted by an American couple at around the age of two. He opted to return to Russia in 2020, seeking his roots, as well as his biological mother, whom he ultimately met on a Russian TV show.

At the time, Woodland’s story received some coverage in the Russian media. Woodland claimed, among other things, that he had been effectively sold to his foster parents by an orphanage for a bribe of $10,000.

6) Forbes calls Musk ‘biggest loser’ 4 Jul, 2024 20:05

The fortune of the Tesla and SpaceX founder has taken a hit in 2024

Elon Musk’s net worth has decreased by almost $30 billion, more than any other billionaire in the world this year, according to Forbes magazine rankings published on Thursday.

Although the Tesla and SpaceX founder remains the richest person on earth, his personal fortune declined from $251.3 billion at the beginning of the year to $221.4 billion as of June 28, the final day of stock market trading in the second quarter of 2024.

Forbes described this as “a rare loss in what was otherwise a great stretch for the megarich as the stock market boomed” and the net worth of the world’s ten wealthiest people grew to $1.66 trillion.

Musk’s setback came down to a Delaware judge’s verdict from January, invalidating his Tesla compensation package on behalf of an activist investor. The bonus was valued at $51 billion at the time. Forbes has discounted the value of those stock options by 50% even if Musk somehow manages to get them, citing likely litigation.

Tesla has since left Delaware, re-incorporated in Texas, and approved Musk’s compensation package again. The value of Musk’s 13% stake in Tesla has decreased by about $20 billion, however, as the company’s shares slipped due to declining car deliveries and profits.

Musk still has a $14.4 billion stake in the generative artificial intelligence startup xAI, a $7 billion stake in X (formerly Twitter), which he acquired in 2022, and an estimated $75 billion stake in his private aerospace company SpaceX, among other enterprises.

According to Forbes, Musk has lost an estimated $99 billion since November 2021, when his portfolio was worth about $320 billion.

In March, Musk was briefly dethroned as the world’s richest man by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has since slipped back to the number-two spot at just over $214 billion. Bringing up the top three is Bernard Arnault, Europe’s richest man and head of the luxury goods company LVMH, now valued under $197 billion.

Much of 2024’s billionaire bonanza has been the result of an artificial intelligence boom. The biggest winner has been NVIDIA chief executive Jensen Huang, who gained $64.1 billion this year and moved up from 27th place to 14th in the Forbes rankings.

The stock market has also been kind to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg (up $61.5 billion), Dell CEO Michael Dell ($35.8 billion), Oracle chairman Larry Ellison ($37.7 billion richer), and Google co-founder Larry Page (up $33.1 billion).

Other big ‘losers’ were Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu (down $13.9 billion), Nike co-founder Phil Knight (down $9.2 billion), and Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott, who spent $4.7 billion mainly on liberal political causes.

7) Nigel Farage is ‘coming for Labour’ after ‘the end’ of the Tories 5 Jul, 2024 03:33

The Reform UK leader has been elected as a member of parliament on his eighth attempt

Eurosceptic firebrand Nigel Farage won a seat in the UK parliament for the first time in Thursday's general election, defeating his Conservative challenger in the Essex constituency of Clacton – and promising to mount a strong opposition to Labour.

Farage called his victory “the first step of something that is going to stun all of you,” promising to turn his Reform UK party into the main opposition. The former Brexit Party, created in 2018, is projected to win 13 out of 650 seats.

“There is a massive gap on the centre-right of British politics and my job is to fill it,” he said, claiming: “this is the beginning of the end of the Conservative Party.”

The Tories have suffered their worst-ever election defeat, securing only 131 seats, according to exit polls and early results. Before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dissolved parliament and called a general election, the ruling party held a majority of 344 seats.

Farage proclaimed that his party would “now be targeting Labour votes,” as the polls suggested the centre-left landslide was motivated by resentment against the Conservatives, rather than confidence in party leader Keir Starmer.

“What is interesting is, there’s no enthusiasm for Labour, there’s no enthusiasm for Starmer whatsoever. In fact, about half of the vote is simply an anti-Conservative vote,” he said. “We’re coming for Labour, be in no doubt about that.”

Farage served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1999 until the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in 2020, but had never previously been elected to the British Parliament.

Ahead of the election, Farage was accused of being a Moscow sympathizer after he blamed NATO expansion in Europe for the Ukraine conflict. During a BBC interview last month he claimed the US-led bloc gave the Russian government an excuse to rally domestic support for the military operation.

Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin said he expected accusations of election interference, but that the change of government was unlikely to alter Britain’s policy towards Russia.

8) Putin weighs in on Biden-Trump debate 5 Jul, 2024 00:17

The Russian leader has only seen “some fragments” of the face-off and still prefers a more predictable candidate to win

The United States is a major world power, so its internal affairs inevitably affect global issues, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said, commenting on the recent televised clash between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

The Russian leader said he has more important things to do than follow the twists of domestic electoral process in the US, when asked about last week’s debate at a Thursday press conference following the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

“I have enough to do, so I don’t really follow what’s going on there, especially through the comments in the media. They always have certain preferences: someone is for, someone is against,” Putin said, admitting however that he had seen “some fragments” of the debate.

Earlier this year, Putin claimed that it would be better for Russia if Biden is reelected, describing the incumbent as “a more experienced and predictable person… a politician of the old sort” and waving off claims of the US leader’s cognitive decline.

Asked whether the debate, described as “disastrous” for Biden even by allies, has somehow affected his opinion, Putin insisted that “nothing has changed,” adding “didn’t we all know what might happen?”

“But this is, in fact, their internal business,” Putin stated, reiterating Moscow’s readiness to work with whoever the Americans elect – but noting that the world can’t stay completely “indifferent” to US politics.

“In general, of course… it is impossible to turn away from this, especially since the United States remains a great power with well-known capabilities in the field of economics, security, and military,” and as a permanent member of the UN Security Council can affect global affairs, including the situation in Ukraine, Putin explained.

As for Trump, Putin said he takes his statements “quite seriously,” when asked about the former US president’s repeated claims that he knows how to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine, and recent reports that he might halt NATO expansion.

“Of course, I am not familiar with his possible suggestions on how he is going to do this – and this, of course, is the key question. But I have no doubt that he says it sincerely, and we support it,” Putin said.

8a) Biden says he wants ‘more sleep’ and ‘less work’ – NYT 4 Jul, 2024 21:55

The US president reportedly made the admission during a meeting with Democratic governors aimed at bolstering support for his campaign

US President Joe Biden has admitted he needs to get more sleep and work less, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the remarks.

Biden reportedly made the statements during a gathering of Democratic governors on Wednesday. The event was organized to try and reassure key players within the party that the 81-year-old president is still fit for his job and vigorous enough to run a strong reelection campaign.

During the meeting, the president repeatedly told more than 20 Democratic governors that he would not be pushed out of the race and was “in it to win it,” according to reports by multiple media outlets.

Biden admitted he would like to sleep more and work less, in particular abstaining from scheduling any events past 8pm, the NYT report claims. When pressed about his physical condition, he referred to a recent medical checkup, a separate report by Politico suggested.

Longstanding concerns about Biden’s physical and mental capacities came to the fore in the Democratic establishment following what was widely perceived as a calamitous debate with Republican rival Donald Trump last week. The Biden campaign has provided various excuses for the poor performance, claiming he had caught a cold.

During the meeting with the governors, however, Biden reportedly said he fared poorly during the debate due to his failure to ease up on his schedule ahead of the faceoff against Trump.

Multiple major Democratic donors have already voiced their dissatisfaction with Biden. Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings openly told the NYT on Thursday that the debate was “disastrous” and that Biden should step down from the reelection campaign.

“Biden needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” he said.

Dozens of elected Democrats in Congress are reportedly considering signing an open letter to Biden urging him to suspend his campaign. The motion was first reported by Bloomberg, which, however, did not name those considering such a move while attributing the news to an unnamed “senior party official.”

9) Exclusive: First Indian in space calls Russian cosmonaut on ISS 5 Jul, 2024 04:27

Rakesh Sharma, who traveled to outer space on a Soviet spacecraft in 1984, asked whether Earth looks more polluted than before

Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space, has connected with Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), via a live link to discuss how Earth looks from orbit.

Sharma, now 75, flew on board the Soviet Union’s Soyuz T-11 with Russian cosmonauts Yury Malyshev and Gennady Strekalov in 1984. He spent seven days in space conducting scientific studies and experiments.

During his conversation with Kononenko, Sharma asked if the degradation of Earth’s environment is visible from far above. The Russian replied that Earth still looked “blue” from space, but cities were sprawling, and there was a noticeable reduction in the forested area of the Amazon in South America.

The interaction between the former Indian spacefarer and Kononenko, who recently set a record by spending a total of 1,000 days in space since 2008, is featured in RT’s new TV show ‘Starbound: Path to the Stars’, launched in collaboration with the Russian space agency Roscosmos. The initiative allows people worldwide to connect with the ISS and interact with Russian cosmonauts on board.

Watch the episode : https://rumble.com/v540k3r-starbound-russian-indian-cooperation-in-space.html

The show premiered on RT last week, with India being the first country among the BRICS nations to be featured. Apart from Sharma, Kononenko also fielded live questions from ordinary Indians who gathered near the iconic Red Fort monument in Delhi for a live video link with the ISS. The cosmonaut was asked whether pets are allowed on the space station and if it’s possible to get sick while aboard the ISS.

“How do you sleep in zero gravity, and do you get insomnia?” asked one questioner. Admitting that sleeping “can be an issue,” Kononenko added that crew on the station tend to “sleep very well” after a hard day’s work, such as a spacewalk. “On the whole, though, it is about the same as on Earth – some nights are better than others,” he said.

The mission control center also has a medical support and supervision group that monitors the cosmonauts’ health 24x7.

Throughout four decades of Russian-Indian cooperation in space, which started with Sharma’s spaceflight in 1984, the two countries have collaborated on various projects. Russia has trained four astronauts for India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, scheduled to lift off next year.
