Vs 1 - 18: Trials and Spiritual growth. We are to view these things, trials, tribulations, etc., as or with great joy.The testing of our faith produces endurance, endurance when fully realized leads us to a spiritual maturity, a faith that is mature and complete, lacking nothing.
Vs 19 - 27: Hearing and Doing. We are to be hearers of the Word of GOD, but not just hearers but doers as well. If anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. James introduces a couple of ideas in the second half of CH 1 that he will come back to later in his letter.
Legalism says: We are saved by works or our good deeds. Like following the Law of Moses. Freedom and Grace says: We are saved without works or deeds. But we are saved FOR good works or good deeds.Legalism says: Not free to sin.Grace says: We are free to sin. Therefore, we can choose not to sin.
