Ukrainian journalist and author Illia Ponomarenko describes the desperate chaos of Kyiv in the first hours of the full-scale Russian invasion but insists just after “the darkest hours” there was “a beam of hope” for Ukrainians who had decided to fight. Ponomarenko tells DW’s Tim Sebastian that Ukraine has become an incredibly vibrant place despite the war because “there might be no tomorrow.” The author even finds hope in Bucha, scene of gruesome killings and alleged Russian war crimes, where he now lives. Ponomarenko said Bucha is inspiring since its liberation after Russia’s attempt to seize the Ukrainian capital was defeated at the start of the war. The only way to secure peace, Ponomarenko says, is to either ensure Russia cannot conduct offensive operations or that Ukraine's capacity to defend itself is "way too strong" for opponents to attack.
