For the first time some of you will understand the purpose of tongues, why they were given and why they ceased in the 1st century. This is such an area of confusion, but it doesn't have to be. Tongues are not a sign of blessing or maturity. They are a sign of judgment. This is very clear from the way Paul uses Isa 28:11-12 in this passage. Further, we will see that tongues were uncontrollable ecstatic utterances. The speaker was in full control and could keep his mouth shut. All this and more...
