Between May 8th and 10th, HAARP conducted tests involving the transmission of high-frequency radio waves into the upper atmosphere and ionosphere. This action induced the ionosphere to emit light, resulting in an artificial glow just before the recent sightings of the Aurora Borealis.

Additionally, in November 2023, despite resembling the aurora, the red or greenish "airglow" in the ionosphere is a result of a rare, four-day-long series of experiments conducted at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in Gakona, Alaska.
