Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek announced on Saturday that emergency crews are close to fully restoring water use after a major feeder main break that has affected the city’s waterlines for nearly a month.

Gondek mentioned that many people, including Premier Danielle Smith, are seeking answers regarding the cause of the initial break and how to enhance the city’s water system for the future.

On her province-wide radio show "Your Province. Your Premier," Smith said that developers informed her about Calgary’s high water leakage, referencing a report from the spring. "We need to investigate why Calgary’s water leakage rates in their pipe system are high and address this issue," she stated. Smith also expressed concerns about whether Calgary’s water infrastructure can handle the additional stress from planned blanket rezoning to include more apartment complexes.

Gondek responded that the report mentioned by Smith has been thoroughly discussed and presented to city council.

Additionally, the general manager of Calgary Infrastructure Services, Michael Thompson, added that the city is actively collaborating with industry to reduce water leakage across the system.
