How did the U-2 spy plane get shot down over Cuba?
The Lockheed U-2 has been prominently featured in several events during the Cold War. In 1960, CIA pilot Gary Powers was shot down while flying over Soviet territory. But there wasn't the only time when the U-2 was shot down by the enemy fire. On October 27, 1962, Major Rudolf Anderson took off in a U-2F Dragon Lady, from a forward operating location at McCoy Air Force Base in Orlando, Florida. Thirteen days before, the Air Force major had flown one of the first top-secret reconnaissance missions over Cuba that confirmed the existence of Soviet missile sites just 90 miles from the American mainland.
