I am not usually a big fan of wireless headsets for gaming or video editing due to latency issues and signal dropouts, but not so here. This new headset, the first I have tried with the new Bluetooth 5.4 connection, has changed all that for me.
The headset arrived simply packaged in a surprisingly small and rather simple box. Inside was the headset itself, a short charging cable, a USB dongle and a well written and easy on read User Guide. The build quality all seems fine with a rather high end feel to the headset. It is a pity that no carry case was included as this headset is dearer than many rivals and perhaps less robust than some and would benefit from it.
The main selling point for this headset is the dual mode wireless connection it offers. It has the very latest Bluetooth 5.4 system as well as a 2.4Ghz wireless dongle. The Bluetooth connection with a latency of just 48ms is very fast in itself but is beaten by the dongle with a latency of just 24ms. Although the Bluetooth connection is more familiar to most users and is indeed itself super speedy and reliable, I would always suggest using the dongle whenever possible to get the fastest and most stable connection.
The headset is of the over-ear type and does a decent job of passive noise reduction to cut down on outside distractions when gaming although I was hoping there may have been the option for active noise reduction also. The large ear cups are comfortable enough but not excessively well padded and this is true for the headband also. The headset is lighter in weight than I was expecting and would be a excellent for long gaming sessions. A non detachable flexible stalk microphone is provided which can be switched off with a button on the headset. There are on-ear controls for power/play/pause/call control, volume/track navigation, microphone mute and wireless connection mode selection. The is a USB-C charging port on the side next to the proper clicky control buttons. There is no audio out socket and so the headset cannot be used with an audio cable, which is a pity.
The headset uses a 1200mAh Lithium Ion rechargeable battery which gives up to 50 hours of use from a two to three hour USB-C hour charge. I found run times to be exceptional and better than from any other headset of this type I have used before.
Sound quality is excellent, probably the best I have encountered from any gaming headset. There is plenty of bass, mid-tones are clear and well defined and there is no sibilance or abrasive high-end tones. The sound quality is better than most gamers will need and is easily good enough for music and general audio reproduction. In fact In have now replaced my old general purpose computer headset with this one.
The 2.4Ghz wireless dongle connection was lag-free, fast and stable in my tests the Bluetooth connection was not far behind it, showing the advances made with Bluetooth 5.4. Making the initial Bluetooth connection was quick and easy with subsequent connections being transparent and automatic.
Unlike many lesser gaming headsets this one does not sport multipole garish LED lights but has a simple and subtle LED light around the base of the microphone stalk which turns on and colour scroll when the mic is live.
The microphone, usually the weak link in gaming headsets, is actually rather good although the output level is on the low side. Voice and background sound reproduction is excellent and free from the muddiness and distortion too often found with just some residual background noise detectable at high volume. Call quality is fine with the conversation clear and audible at both ends.
This is an excellent quality all round headset and although aimed at the gaming market, many hardcore gamers may need more niche features than on offer here. That is no problem for me and at the current Amazon price of £35.99 this is decent buy.
