Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter known for his vibrant and expressive use of color and his bold, impasto brushstrokes. He is considered one of the greatest painters in history and is best known for his works such as “Starry Night” and “Sunflowers.”
Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands, and grew up in a Protestant family. He struggled with mental illness throughout his life and was hospitalized several times for depression and anxiety. Despite his personal struggles, he was incredibly prolific, producing over 2,000 artworks during his lifetime, including more than 900 paintings.
Van Gogh’s artistic style was heavily influenced by the Impressionists and the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. He was known for his bold use of color and his thick, impasto brushstrokes, which gave his paintings a textured, almost three-dimensional quality. His subjects included landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, and he was particularly skilled at capturing the emotional depth of his subjects.
Tragically, van Gogh’s life was cut short when he took his own life at the age of 37 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Despite his relatively short career, his legacy has endured, and he remains one of the most beloved and influential artists in history.
