On June 27, 2024, at 4:10 a.m., West Precinct officers responded at an apartment complex off Old Hickory Boulevard in West Nashville, after a 27-year-old man called 911 and reported that his 25-year-old brother cut him with a knife and held it to his neck. Officers walked through the extremely dark apartment complex, in search of the knife wielding man, identified as 25-year-old Max Van Sickle. Officers had their tasers drawn but did not have the opportunity to use them, due to Van Sickle's sudden appearance and threat, as he rushed down the steps with the large knife in his left hand. One officer fired his gun, striking Van Sickle. The officers rendered medical aid to Van Sickle, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire department paramedics.
