Acts - Chapter 12 Summary:

Acts chapter 12 recounts the persecution of the early church by King Herod, including the martyrdom of James and the miraculous rescue of Peter. Herod Agrippa I arrests some Christians to persecute them, killing James, the brother of John, which pleases the Jewish leaders. Encouraged by this reaction, Herod imprisons Peter, intending to bring him to public trial after Passover. The church prays earnestly for Peter. On the night before his trial, an angel of the Lord appears in Peter's cell, freeing him from his chains and leading him past the guards to safety outside the prison. Peter realizes the rescue is real and not a vision, and he goes to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many are praying. Despite initial disbelief, they welcome him. Herod is furious about Peter's escape and orders the execution of the guards. The chapter concludes with Herod's dramatic death after he accepts praise as a god and is struck down by an angel of the Lord, highlighting the growth and unstoppable nature of God's word.
