IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN KENYAN PROTESTORS

Every revolution has its martyrs. Kenya’s Gen Z has paid a terrible price for its courageous opposition to now-shelved tax hikes. Security forces unleashed a heavy-handed response in Nairobi on Tuesday as protesters assembled en masse to reject more economic hardship amid a cost-of-living crisis - opening live fire when some in the crowd entered parliament. The Kenya Medical Association says at least 23 people were killed in the unrest, which also saw over 160 injured as riot squads used tear gas, water cannon and batons. Additionally, the security apparatus abducted bloggers and influencers supporting the protests, holding them incommunicado for days.

African Stream wants to pay its respects to all the brave Kenyans who paid the highest price fighting for their dignity. We also salute all those who showed up, especially those who were injured or harassed. Power to the people!

Soundtrack: "Senzeni Na?" Performed by Cape Town Youth Choir, 2010
