Daniel Manduku, a member of Kenya’s Parliament involved in a multi-million dollar state corruption scandal in 2020, called on President William Ruto to dissolve the National Assembly and hold elections within 90 days because of corruption.

The legislator said elected leaders are to blame for nationwide anger over a cost-of-living crisis and rising unemployment. Before his election to Parliament, $15.4 million went missing while Manduku served as the Kenya Ports Authority’s managing director.

The week-long youth-led protests against International Monetary Fund-backed tax hikes forced Ruto to back down from signing a controversial finance bill that he had said was needed to shore up government revenues to pay off $80 billion in domestic and foreign debt. However, Kenyans accused his administration of trying to burden Kenyans with more levies to make up for corruption and wasteful spending, including his many flights abroad in just two years.

Under Article 261(7) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the President has the authority to dissolve Parliament if it fails to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
