MALEMA BLASTS ROYAL-LOVING RUTO

Remember this moment from November 2023? South African politician Julius Malema blasted Kenya’s red-carpet treatment of King Charles III, saying the welcome betrayed the spirit of the Mau Mau, who bravely fought British colonial rule.

Just recently, over the past week and a half, the liberation spirit of anti-imperialist heroes like Dedan Kimathi has inspired youth-led protests against International Monetary Fund-backed tax hikes packaged in a finance bill. Unfortunately, police reportedly k*lled at least 22 in the capital, Nairobi, on 25 June during the ‘Occupy Parliament’ demonstration.

Malema (@julius.malema.sello on IG and @julius_s_malema on TW), president of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (@effsouthafrica on IG and TW), made this damning speech at the 9 November 2023 launch of the Pan African Institute in Kenya. Never one for holding back, he stuck it to Ruto on welcoming King Charles and for making U-turns on campaign promises, such as moving away from using the US dollar. Ruto, meanwhile, has cast himself as a champion of the African cause. However, many have criticised him for being the ‘Black face of US imperialism’ because he has sent Kenyan police officers—with US backing—to allegedly ‘pacify’ Haiti when his own country is in turmoil due to a cost-of-living crisis and wasteful government spending.

Who do you think has the continent’s best interests at heart: Ruto or Malema? Let us know in the comments.
