Gambling-addicted wife borrows cash, cannot repay, says masked men abducted her

In a plot twist that would make even the most seasoned soap opera writers envious, a pregnant woman in Thailand decided to stage her own kidnapping with the help of loan sharks she owed money to. Why, you ask? So she could tap into her husband’s savings to pay off her debt. Spoiler alert: Things did not go as planned.

The absurdity began when the woman, residing in Samut Prakan province, took 80,000 Thai baht (US$2,200) from her husband’s bank account. She told him she was just stepping out to photocopy some documents, because, you know, that's the perfect cover story. Shortly after, her husband received a text message from her phone that read: “If you want your wife and children to be safe, don’t call the police.” Sure, that’s not suspicious at all.

The plot thickened when a video followed, showing his five-months-pregnant wife with a black bag over her head, hands bound, apparently having a solo camping adventure in a remote forest. With this Oscar-worthy performance, she managed to spark a frantic search involving her husband, friends, family, and eventually the police.

Bright and early on May 31, officers and a rescue team found the woman in the forest, behind what must have been the world’s sketchiest building, soaking wet and shivering. Her bag was inside out, and her belongings, including documents and personal items, were artistically scattered on the ground, like a scene from a crime drama.

Off to the hospital she went, sticking to her story like glue. She claimed that after photocopying the documents, she was accosted by two masked men who, naturally, threatened her with a knife, abducted her in a pickup truck, and covered her head with a black bag. Classic.

The supposed kidnappers then forced her to transfer 80,000 Thai baht from her husband’s account and also took her ATM and phone cards. However, plot holes in her story soon emerged, akin to a movie with a rushed third act. The police discovered bank transfers and receipts related to loan sharks on her phone. It was like finding the script for the whole debacle in her purse.

After what we can imagine were some intense interrogation scenes, the woman confessed, revealing her gambling addiction. But, she insisted, that had nothing to do with the kidnapping. Because, of course, why would it? After three hours of questioning, she finally admitted to staging the whole event with the help of the loan sharks. Turns out, she had borrowed about 70,000 Thai baht from them and thought raiding her husband’s savings would be the perfect solution. Surprise!

In a twist of mercy, considering their unborn child, the husband asked the police to let his wife off the hook. The police recorded the incident, gave her a stern warning about the dangers of gambling, and presumably wished her luck on her next adventure.
