German Economy Minister Robert Habeck emphasized the critical role of China in global climate efforts, underscoring the need for China to transition away from coal, which currently supplies nearly 60% of its electricity.

Habeck, following meetings in Beijing, highlighted China’s concerns about energy security amidst global geopolitical tensions, including Europe’s energy crisis exacerbated by Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Stressing the necessity of cooperation with China, Habeck noted that achieving global climate targets would not be possible without China’s participation.

He acknowledged China’s awareness of CO2 emissions’ impact on climate change and advocated for reducing reliance on coal-fired power plants while integrating more renewable energy sources like wind and solar, Reuters reported.
