Myers the dog helps heal Childhood Trauma

We brought Myers into our home Mother's Day weekend 4 years ago. He is a sweet black mouth Cur mix who loves with all of his little heart and full of big emotions. Soon after he settled in we started to notice some negative interactions with our son which escalated to a point where we did try to unsuccessfully rehome. I reached out to Michele and asked her to have a session with Myers and help me figure out how to best support him and create a safe environment.

We presented this to Myers as a "shit or get off the pot" or "step up to the plate" type situation if he wanted to continue to be part of our family. Myers decided he wanted to stay and was willing to step up and do what he needed to do. I told him if he did his part I would do mine to make it work. Fast forward 4yrs and we have come a long way. In addition to sessions with Michele, we found a great doggie daycare and training facility where Myers has flourished. They have given Myers the tools he needs to learn how to work through his emotions and also continue to teach us in how to best support him.

Recently I was still having struggles on walks with Myers and since I promised Myers if he did his part(which he did and still works on it) I would do mine, I reached out to a dear friend and had a hypnotherapy session. Through this I learned that Myers reactions were triggering childhood trauma. I had a negative interaction with a dog as a child that I was friendly with. During the session we worked through that and things have improved more and more every day. This show how much we can learn from our animals while we are trying to help them. Its a journey that you walk together.
