On April 25, 1945, as World War II was winding down, Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator, agreed to meet with a delegation of partisans at the palace of Milan’s Cardinal Alfredo Schuster. His stronghold in Milan was teetering, and the Third Reich was losing its grip on northern Italy. However, unbeknownst to Mussolini, the Nazis had already begun negotiations for an unconditional surrender. The following day, he attempted to flee Milan with his mistress, Clara Petacci, but was captured by partisans in the lakeside town of Dongo. For 20 years, Mussolini had built a cult of personality with his image emblazoned on posters and newspapers. Even in disguise, his distinctive shaved head and granite jaw gave him away. The partisans seized Mussolini and Petacci, and their bodies were later dumped in Milan’s Piazzale Loreto.
