Nigeria | 28-Year Inflation High Burdens Nigerians
In May, Nigeria’s annual inflation rate surged to a 28-year high, reaching 33.95%. It is driven by soaring food prices and a weakened naira. Economic reforms — including subsidy cuts and two naira devaluations by President Bola Tinubu — have further exacerbated these inflationary pressures. In a bid to control inflation and quell further social unrest, the Central Bank of Nigeria raised interest rates for the third time this year. The country’s authoritarian regime continues to close exit ramps, continuing to put restrictions on citizen use of dollars, Bitcoin, and stablecoins. In this repressive environment, it’s no wonder that Nigerians continue to come up with ways to fight back.
