Senate GOP blocks Democratic effort to ban bump stocks after Supreme Court ruling

Senate Republicans thwarted Democrats’ attempt to pass a ban on bump stocks following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a Trump-era prohibition on these firearm accessories.

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), who authored the BUMP Act, sought unanimous consent for the proposal, but Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) blocked it.

The action came shortly after the Supreme Court invalidated a 2018 ATF policy on bump stocks, prompted by a mass shooting in Las Vegas involving these devices.

Ricketts criticized Democrats for what he called another symbolic vote during their “summer of show votes,” likening it to recent actions on reproductive rights, The Hill has reported.
