American scholar Noam Chomsky is known for his political activism and criticisms of capitalism, mass media and US foreign policy - including in Africa.

He recently suffered a stroke, and has been recuperating in Brazil - with his wife dismissing reports of his death.

In this clip, Chomsky talks about Belgium’s horrific colonial occupation of Congo.

He says the resource-rich country had the potential to become an African superpower, but it was destroyed along with its charismatic leader Patrice Lumumba - who would have turned 99 this year, had he not been assassinated.

Chomsky calls his killing by Belgium one of the worst crimes of the 20th century - noting that the Americans were also out to get him.

What do you think DRC would be like now had Lumumba been allowed to live?
