The U.S. military conducted an airstrike in Somalia targeting Abdulqadir Mumin, the global leader of ISIS, late last month, though his death remains unconfirmed, according to three U.S. officials.

Mumin, identified publicly as the head of ISIS in Somalia, reportedly became the worldwide leader of the group last year.

The airstrike, carried out 81 km southeast of Bosaso, killed three militants without civilian casualties.

While AFRICOM did not specify the targets, U.S. officials confirmed Mumin was the intended target, NBC News has reported.
