Breaking News: Dad's Are A Thing! ep. 418

This show has a lot of personal opinion in it and I just don't care. Frankly I'm so sick of the attacks on Dads that I am simply out of patience. We are told that we should not act masculine - how the hell do I do that... I happen to be a man. We are told that masculine traits like be protective or stoic are bad - well what traits are okay? I hear that I have some sort of privilege because I'm male - well what privilege are you referring to? Being told that everything about you is bad and you should act like something you aren't?

Dads are men and they are men that have a job - teaching and protecting their kids. A dad's top job is to help their kids be good people that can navigate this messed up world. Paramount to doing that is teaching your kids to be okay with who they are boys or girls and helping them to understand that the world owes them nothing - including acceptance - and that they will be much better standing strong as themselves than looking for outside approval.

A dad has to balance love with reality. Loving your kids is foundational but helping them prepare for a tough world where people will try to use and abuse them is necessary. Love sometimes means telling your kid no or helping them to understand that all their actions have consequences - good and bad. It means standing by them when they make mistakes but helping them avoid those mistakes when possible. The one thing that love does not mean is standing by approvingly while your kid is making a disastrous decision and being too cowardly to intervene. Being a dad takes courage and it certainly means having the courage to educate your kids when they are doing something absurd... furries anyone?
