The Chinese New Year celebrations in Perth’s Northbridge are always a spectacular display of culture, and 2018 was no exception. Marking the Year of the Dog, the event drew massive crowds to James Street and Chinatown on February 18, 2018, despite the scorching 33-degree weather. One of the highlights was the breathtaking Lion Dragon Dance performance by the Yaolin Kung Fu Association.
This performance wasn’t just any Lion Dance—it was an acrobatic display on poles that had the audience on the edge of their seats. The dancers demonstrated incredible skill and strength, maneuvering the lion with precision and grace atop tall poles, a traditional and highly revered feat in Chinese culture. The vibrant colours of the lion costume, combined with the rhythmic drumming, created an atmosphere of excitement and celebration, bringing the spirit of the New Year to life.
The Yaolin Kung Fu Association is renowned for its exceptional Lion Dance performances, and this acrobatic display was a testament to their dedication and artistry. The crowd was captivated as the lion leapt from pole to pole, a symbolic gesture of warding off evil spirits and bringing good fortune for the year ahead.
This event not only celebrated the Chinese New Year but also showcased the rich cultural heritage that makes Perth’s multicultural community so vibrant.
