T-90M Tank Hit by a Javelin ATGM but the Crew Survived

June 2024.

While suppressing AFU firing points in one of the built-up areas in the Kupyansk operational area, using the commander's panoramic sight to detect enemy positions and the Central Command Unit and the Sosna-U multi-channel gunner's sight to fire ZOF26 shells from the 2A46M-5 gun, the crew of the T-90M Breakthrough-3 main battle tank encountered opposition from a roaming formation of Javelin ATGMs.

By capturing the IR signature of the recently shoot2A46M-5 gun, the FGM-148E missile's seeker guided the missile into the upper armour plate of the 50mm turret and managed to penetrate it with its main shaped charge, while the leading missile presumably "overcame" the 4S22 Kontact-5 ERA element.
Apparently, this vehicle did not yet have a improved anti-shock "canopy".

Nevertheless, the empty ammunition belt did not lead to the detonation of the ammo. Moreover, the T-90M crew was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The vehicle retained its combat stability and underwent repairs.
We have discussed before how the IR arrays on older Javelin models are not accurate enough to distinguish parts of the tank, so they tend to focus on the hot gun.
