The “studenterhue,” the iconic white hat awarded to graduates of Danish secondary education, holds a special charm in Denmark. Spotting one on the streets triggers a wave of warmth and joy, as strangers greet the young graduates with a heartfelt “tillykke med hue,” welcoming them into the adult world.

In the latest episode of the "How to Live in Denmark" podcast, I share a personal story about my daughter’s graduation last year. She was amazed by the numerous warm congratulations from strangers, from bus drivers to supermarket clerks, making her feel celebrated and cherished.

June is a time of happiness in Denmark, and the white hat symbolizes a unique graduation experience that resonates deeply with the Danish people, even more so than university graduations. The tradition is rich with customs, including the honor of a parent or grandparent placing the hat on the graduate’s head for the first time and the lively “truck tour,” where each stop is marked with celebrations and drinks.

As graduates fill the streets over the next two weeks, the Danish norm of not talking to strangers fades away. Take the opportunity to congratulate these young individuals and share in their joy.
