Baltimore police released bodycam video of a fatal police shooting from May.

The video released shows the May 24 shooting death of Anthony Ferguson, 39.

According to police, investigators had been following Ferguson and knew where to find him in south Baltimore when he took a break from work. They wanted to question him about firing a weapon four days prior, in which no one was hit.

The video shows officers searching Ferguson's backpack as he started backing away and pulled a gun from his waistband, firing three rounds, police said.

"It was a Springfield 45 semiautomatic; it did have an extended magazine on it, which can carry anywhere between 27 and 29 rounds," Baltimore Police Deputy Commissioner Brian Nadeau said.

According to police, five officers shot 39 rounds at Ferguson. Detective Nicolas Wellems, a 10-year BPD veteran, was struck in the chest by one of Ferguson's rounds.

"(The) gunshot struck him in the vest," Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said. "If the vest isn't there, it goes into his heart and probably kills him."

"He was observed on camera discharging his weapon. The officer who received the gunshot here was doing the investigation," Nadeau said.

Public court records indicate Ferguson had a long and violent criminal history that included multiple gun and drug charges. He also faced a manslaughter charge.
