Last year, I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, and as a result, my confidence took a massive blow. My hair has always been a bit of a comfort blanket to me and it was one of my favourite features, so seeing substantial hair loss and bald patches was really difficult to come to terms with. I was convinced that everyone around me could tell I was going bald at 21, and whilst the reality was probably a completely different story, I became ashamed of my hair and really struggled with the lack of self-confidence that came alongside that. It took me months to openly talk about my diagnosis, but when I confided in my hairdresser back in December she told me that she’d been through a really similar experience and had seen amazing results from a haircare brand called Nioxin. I’d seen Nioxin mentioned a lot in relation to hair loss or thinning, but it wasn’t until my hairdresser explained just how well it had worked for me that I decided to try it out for myself. Luckily, my brother gifted me the Nioxin System 3 Three Piece Kit as a Christmas present, so I could put it to the test and see if it really was going to help on my hair loss journey.
The Nioxin System has six different varieties, each designed to target a different type of hair. Each system consists of three products, a cleansing shampoo, scalp revitalising conditioner and a leave-in scalp treatment. Both my hairdresser and the online Nioxin consultation tool deemed System 3 to be the best fit for my hair as it’s designed to refresh the scalp and improve the texture of thinning hair whilst also ensuring chemically treated (with years of hair dye in my case) hair remains in best possible condition. My dermatologist had previously commented on the poor condition of my regrowing hair, suggesting that it looked a bit too fine to constitute towards any substantial regrowth and whilst the majority of my hair seemed relatively strong the newly growing hair was falling out with just a touch, so this seemed like the most suitable system to choose.

The process is pretty simple and unlike some other hair treatment systems doesn’t require a lot of waiting around, meaning it was really easy to fit into my usual routine. Starting with wet hair, you apply the shampoo as you would usually and massage into the scalp, lathering for a minute or so before rinsing. My hair does sometimes feel a bit stripped at this point, which was worrying at first, but it doesn’t last. The conditioner, or scalp revitaliser as Nioxin call it, is then applied all over the hair including the scalp. I was worried this method of application would weigh my hair down a lot, but it definitely doesn’t. Nioxin recommend leaving the conditioner on for 1-3 minutes, but I usually keep it on for around 5 minutes or longer before rinsing. This might be down to the fact that the shampoo and conditioner both smell like mint chocolate chip ice cream, which I love.
Finally, after rinsing the conditioner I’ll apply a generous helping of the scalp treatment all over my head, making sure to cover the areas I’m most concerned about, then massaging it in slightly. I find this leave-in treatment can tingle a little bit, but it’s nothing uncomfortable or painful, it just feels slightly cold. I’ll then wrap my hair up in a towel to dry for a bit before I style as usual.

But does it actually make a difference?

Well, yes. I noticed a huge difference in the condition of my hair from the very first use of the system, and after two months of use, I can’t believe how much better my hair looks. I haven’t seen any miracle regrowth in the most noticeable areas of hair loss, it’s been pretty typical, but the most important thing to me is that the condition of my hair, including the regrowth, has improved massively. My hair is shinier, thicker and has more volume. I’m proud of my hair again, and it is a lot easier to work with. I’ve never seen results like this from a hair treatment in my life and I would honestly recommend the Nioxin system to anyone struggling with thinning hair, hair loss or alopecia like me. Even if you just want your hair to look healthier, this is the one. It sounds silly, but this three part system has given me my confidence back, and although it costs more than I’d typically spend on haircare, retailing at around £29 for the full size set on Amazon, it’s lasted a lot longer than other hair products I’ve used with even better results, so it’s worth it to me. At the end of the day, can you really put a price on confidence?
